PokerStars EPT London – Day 1b report

By attracting 509 players on its second day 1 flight and thus taking the total number of participants to 848, the EPT London Main Event broke all records, becoming the largest ever live poker tournament held in the UK. The prize-pool would guarantee the winner an unprecedented £900k haul.
From the onset of the second day 1 flight, it became obvious that those cheering for a repeat performance from last year’s champion, Aaron Gustavson, would be left disappointed. Gustavson was bounced early on Day 1B, together with the winner of the EPT’s Vilamoura Main Event, Toby Lewis.
Lewis had won the £1k event but he was unable to repeat the performance in the Main Event, on account of sheer bad luck. He 4-bet Padriag Parkinson preflop, holding pocket Qs against Parkinson’s rags which proceeded to hit a flush on the board.

Tony Cascarino, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey all managed to survive the day though, on above average stacks too. Cascarino managed to amass around 180k chips, thanks largely to a huge pot he took down towards the end of the day when his flush got the better of an opponent’s top two pair on the turn.
Negreanu and Ivey both finished with larger than 100k stacks.

Alex Keating lost half his stack due to a time-limit ruling which was rather controversial and commented on by several of the players who’d witnessed it. The floor man counted down the last 10 seconds of the time which Keating had at his disposal to make a decision in a hand he was involved. The last 5 seconds seemed to have been counted faster than the first 5 though.
Regardless, Thomas Kremser ruled against Keating, causing him to take a huge hit to his stack.

JP Kelly, Dave Ulliott and PokerStars’ Liv Boeree were among the survivors as well. Claudio Cecchi finished with the chip lead, on a stack of 237,500.
