PokerStars guarantees $5 million in special anniversary Sunday Million

Pokerstars have something to celebrate, they know how to do it in style. This time, the special occasion is the 5th anniversary of the site’s flagship weekend guaranteed prize-pool MTT, the Sunday Million. With a regular guarantee of $1.5 million, the Sunday Million is currently the biggest tournament of its kind in the online poker industry. Every week, it attracts thousands upon thousands of players, many of them ‘name’ pros. The pro heavy fields often yields ‘name’ winners, and there are almost always a few well-known professionals finishing in the top 10 of the event.
Deals at the top are relatively common too, as – barring some specially organized event running somewhere - the Sunday Million is pretty much always responsible for the biggest single tournament prize awarded over the weekend.
The anniversary edition of the event was a true block-buster indeed. The poker room took the guarantee to a never-before-seen $5 million, which effectively guaranteed the winner a $1 million payday. Not only that, but the winner of such a genuinely ground-breaking event wouldn’t have to walk or drive around with the commoners anymore either: he would get a Lamborghini Gallardo on top of his prize too. Gas money would obviously not be a problem either.
How does a poker room even attempt to cover such an outlandish guarantee? The answer’s in advertising and in satellites. The buzz about the event was so great around the poker world that hundreds of thousands of people logged in on Sunday, some of them probably brand new players, only lured to the poker giant by the anniversary event. We cannot currently tell you the exact number of registrants, nor the resulting prize-pool, but it’s safe to assume that the guarantee has been handily exceeded.
