The 5th day of the PokerStars.it
EPT San Remo Main Event was yet another short one, the third such short day in a row. The objective for the day was for the field to play down to the 8-handed final table, and given that only 24 players returned to action at the beginning of the day, the feat was neither difficult to achieve nor a time-consuming one. Daniel Neilson of Australia finished the day with the largest stack, having flown under the radar for most of the day. He was the one responsible for bursting the final table bubble too: he sent Team PokerStars Pro’s Johnny Lodden packing in 9th.
Chris McClung had the lead when the action began. Unfortunately for him though, the aggressive style of play which got him this far betrayed him badly on day 5. He kept the pedal to the metal all day, but instead of roughhousing his opponents, he kept doubling them up. All his chips whittled away, he bit the dust for good in 14th place, well short of the final table.
PokerStars pro Kevin MacPhee was one of the beneficiaries of McClung’s bad luck. He shoved all-in preflop with A,Ko and got a call from McClung who had A,Qo. Neither street brought any particular changes to the values of the hands involved, and MacPhee walked away with a huge chunk of his opponent’s chips.
That haul gave MacPhee the lead, but his stint at the top was to be a short-lived one. He proceeded to donate a bunch of his chips to Dimitar Danchev. Danchev managed to trap MacPhee behind a full-house. MacPhee had a straight which he couldn’t get away from.
He still made the final table, albeit on a stack of only 1.1 million chips. Barny Boatman of the Hendon Mob also made the cut, together with Jan Bendik and Rocco Palumbo.
