PokerStars Superstar Showdown III – Isildur1 wins

Isildur1 may have lost the first round of the
PokerStars Superstar Showdown against Isaac Haxton, and won the second round against long time fan Tony G who never missed an opportunity to point it out that Blom was a better player than he and that he felt truly humiliated by the experience, in a confrontation which looked a lot like a Tony G giving the young Swede a moral thrust rather than a straight-up competitive affair. His latest SuperStar Showdown match against the always competitive and extremely sharp Daniel Cates left no doubts about his ability to swim with the sharks though.
After his first 2 SuperStar Showdown sessions, Blom was only $2,579 above the red line. By taking $51,196 from Cates though, all that was tossed right out the window.
For those of you who may not yet know the structure and rules by which the SuperStar Showdown is played, here’s a brief rundown: the SuperStar Showdown is a one-time high stakes heads-up game of poker which consists of 2,500 hands. The game is $50/$100 PLO or NLHE and it’s played over 4 tables. The winner is obviously the player who shows a profit at the end of the 2,500 hands.
Neither Blom nor Cates are players who shy away from contact so to speak, so it wasn’t exactly a surprise that it only took them 4 hours to burn through the 2,500 hands. The game was
NL Holdem and the first all-in only took 13 minutes to develop. Blom won that one. Cates fought back about 30 minutes later, and the back and forth continued on for a while. With 500 hands left however, Blom was firmly in control.
When the session wrapped up, Daniel Negreanu, who had apparently been railing the action, told Blom to email him with the Showdown rules, a gesture which may well be a hint to the fact that he’s the next one in line.
