Day 4 of the
PokerStars sponsored World Poker Tour’s Five Diamond World Poker Classic had a clear objective: to play down to the money bubble. The 36 players who returned to the poker tournament’s tables at the Bellagio, took about two and a half hours to play down to the last 27. From that point on, with the minimum payout of $28,569 secured, the real run for the $1,428,430 begun.
Curt Kohlberg proved to be one of the most successful players of the day as he rose to the chip lead, mostly at the expense of Matt Stout with whom he kept tangling trough the day. Stout found it impossible to turn the table on Kohlberg and he eventually chipped him right up to the top 5.
The biggest hand between the two players saw Kohlberg bust one of Stout’s bluffs on a pair of 9s to build up a monster stack and to send Stout to the brink of elimination. A few hands later, Stout did indeed bust out of the poker tournament at the hands of his Day 4 nemesis: Kohlberg.
The biggest pot of the day was not played for by Stout and Kohlberg though. Faraz Jaka, the other fast-rising star of the day was at the receiving end of that one.
He and Nguyen locked horns over a 2.2 million chip pot. Jaka’s 10,10 went up against Nguyen’s K,Jo. The Q,10, 3 flop gave Jaka a set from the get go. Nguyen picked up an open ended straight draw on which he called Jaka’s all in and failed to fill it up.
The beneficiary of the second biggest hand of the day was Hasan Habib. He didn’t win it, but the lay-down he made was one for the
poker strategy books. As the board fell K,9,3,2,2, Habib fired out a 80,000 chip bet. In response, Jeremy Brown moved all in, having Habib well covered. Habib then folded a set of deuces and Brown shoved a 3 but didn’t want to show his other card. Eventually, compelled by the casino rules, he did turn over another 3 for the boat.
The two players tangled again later and that time Brown did manage to bounce Habib, right on the bubble.
