The Poker Grapevine – Big Changes in GPI POY Race

The WSOP always represents a great opportunity for players to turn the GPI rankings upside down. After all, that’s when most of the live tournament heroics happen, and that’s when new faces surface each year.
This year, it was David Baker’s turn to shake up the GPI’s Player of the Year ranking a little bit. He shot right to the top after turning in several outstanding performances during the
2012 WSOP. Baker’s top success was the winning of the $2.5k 8-Game mixed event in June. It was not his only deep run though: he made the final tables of no fewer than three more events and he made it all the way to 56th place in the Main Event, picking up a $128, 384 prize. Everything accounted for, he cashed 8 times during this year’s series, totaling $800k in profits. While he wasn’t anywhere near the top 10 of the PoY leader board last week, this week he shot straight to the top thanks to his above detailed WSOP antics.
There were other movers and shakers as well. Marvin Rettenmaier moved up a spot too, to send previous leader Jonathan Duhamel all the way down to 3rd place. Phil Ivey dropped two spots from 4th to 6th, while
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu climbed from 9th to 7th.
Eric Cajelais moved up a massive 15 spots to break into the top 10.
In other news: PokerStars’ MicroMillions series made it past its halfway mark the other day. 53 events are already in the books, and there are 53 happy winners, some of whom have actually taken down rather sizeable prizes. The biggest winner of Tuesday for instance was kawachi1984, who pocketed $11k+ for his efforts. PokerStars’ own Andre Coimbra has thus far played in every single MicroMillions event, and he has cashed in 13 of them.
The MicroMillions will peak on July 22 in the Main Event which offers a guaranteed prize-pool of $1 million.
