The
2013 PCA may have stolen all the live tournament lime-light for the first month of the year, and with the Aussie Millions hot on its tail, the attention of the poker press is sure to be kept tied up for the rest of January, but other live poker tournaments are being kicked into gear as you’re reading this. One such event is the WPT Borgata Winter Open, which is looking to put on yet another massive live poker series of events this year. The first event is in fact already in the books: the $560
NL Holdem event drew a truly impressive starting field of 3,871 players, which was quite understandable, given that it offered a $1 million guaranteed prize-pool - quite a potential ROI in this one indeed.
Due to the high number of registrants, the prize-pool was blown to pieces: it ended up weighing in at $1,935,500.
There weren’t any deals made in this event, so the winner – Joseph Stiers – walked away with the initially allotted share of the top dog: $318.1k.
Stiers bested Tanios Abi-Yaghi heads-up. The share of the runner-up was a handsome $209.1k.
Samuel Taylor finished 3rd, for $137.2k. 4th place finisher Mark Sykes was the last player to collect a 6-figure prize.
Dean Schultz was one of the highest finishing notables: he collected $11.2k for his 14th place. Eric Buchman finished 26th, collecting $7k.
In other news: the Red Dragon Main Event of the Macau Poker Cup’s 17th installment went into the books on Sunday. 532 players showed up for the
poker tournament, generating a prize-pool of $675k. Yoshitaka Okawa of Japan was the winner, walking away with a top prize of $143.9k. He bested Zhenwu Wang heads-up. The runner-up collected $100.5k for his efforts.
