The Poker Grapevine – Brandon Cantu Upset

On Day 11 of the 2012 WSOPE, the €10,450 Mix Max
NL Holdem event finally played down to a winner. Jonathan Aguiar was the one who picked up the top prize and the title, at the expense of Brandon Cantu, who – needless to say – wasn’t particularly pleased about it. As a matter of fact, he was so upset he lashed out at his opponent through twitter and through an interview which is available at YouTube. The heads-up bout was interrupted on the day the Main Event kicked off, on account of the casino closing at 5 a.m. Cantu then said that he was looking to put an end to the event as soon as possible the following day, but Jonathan Aguiar argued that he wanted to play in the second day 1 flight of the Main Event, so the heads-up showdown was tabled until Monday.
Cantu has challenged Aguiar to play him for the difference between first place and second in the event and Aguiar has apparently accepted the challenge.
Cantu’s discontent seems to stem from the fact that according to him, he had his opponent on the ropes just before play was stopped at 5 a.m. He said ‘the kid’ was barely able to keep his eyes open, so he felt he had the tournament in the bag then. Instead of granting him the opportunity to finish it off the following day, WSOPE officials decided to offer Aguiar a full day of rest and the opportunity to review tells, strategies and to talk to various people about how to best combat Cantu’s style.
A visibly disturbed Cantu also complained about various other problematic situations that he had run into at the WSOPE.
In other news:
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu has decided to lend the GPI some additional weight by proposing a wager that he would be able to break into the top 20 of the index by the start of the 2013
WSOP. He is currently ranked 31st.
