The Poker Grapevine – Dan Smith Still Atop GPI PoY Standings

Wednesday was the day when the Global Poker Index released its Player of the Year standings. Dan Smith is still leading the pack, having accrued 1010.74 points to clinch the top spot. The interesting thing about Smith’s ‘reign’ is that it’s been going on for 6 weeks now. For 6 whole weeks, no one has been able to budge him from the top, and there has been no shortage of people to try.
Andrew Lichtenberger, the one currently sitting in second place, has quite a bit of catching-up to do. He has 819.7 points to his name and he is followed by Marvin Rettenmaier and Kyle Julius in 3rd and 4th places respectively.
The top 5 saw a single mover: David Baker moved up one spot, pushing Jonathan Duhamel down into 6th place. Other than that, no one in the top 10 made any moves whatsoever. Wrapping up the top 10 is Justin Bonomo with 650.7 points.
Outside the top 10, there were plenty of movers and shakers: Roberto Romenallo shot up a massive 13 places right into 17th spot. Phil Hellmuth came up to 29th place thanks to his WPT efforts in Europe quite possibly, and Kyle Bowker moved 39 places up to 88th. The biggest gainer was Govert Metaal, who moved up 52 spots into 55th place.
In other news: the Latin American Poker Tour is looking to conquer new ground this weekend. The first ever Panama stop of the
PokerStars-sponsored tour kicked off today. The buy-in to the Main Event is $2.3k. The final table is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 30. There will be two day 1 flights after which the field will return to action on Friday, with all survivors under the same roof. The stop will host other events too, like the $4.7k High Roller. There will of course be all sorts of live qualifiers running for the Main Event too.
