The poker grapevine – Eastgate, Ashton Griffin’s prop bet and more

If you’re a poker professional like Ashton Griffin, apparently you do not have to worry about your luck running out at the poker table. All you need to do to replenish that bankroll is to run 70 miles in 24 hours and offer 3-1 odds to a friend of yours betting that you can do it. Really, that’s “all” there is to it. After a lot of drama, some of which we detailed in a previous post, Ashton Griffin has apparently managed to cover the full marathon distance within the 24 hours set by the terms of the prop bet, and thus he walked away with nearly $300k of Haseeb Quereshi’s money. Given the fact that 70 miles represent the distance of a full marathon, we do not by any means recommend that any of our readers attempt to achieve anything of the sort, even if there are hundreds of thousands of buckskins on the line.
In other news: about 6 months or so ago, Peter Eastgate said he would retire from poker for good. It is thus understandable that the presence of his name on the NBC National Heads-up Poker Championship’s registration list created quite of bit of consternation. Eastgate wasted no time addressing the issue in a statement, the bottom line of which is that he doesn’t necessarily consider his playing in this event a bona fide return. He said that the fact that he won the
WSOP Main Event completely changed his life, in a way he wasn’t quite prepared to handle. Even though he did indeed retire last summer, that retirement never excluded the possibility of his playing in a poker event here and there in the future. He also said that given the amount of support he’d received from
PokerStars during the break he’d taken from the game, he felt honored to play in the event as one of the PokerStars sponsored players.
