The poker grapevine – Ladbrokes to acquire 888?


When an online poker/gambling company can’t otherwise obliterate its competitor, there’s one obvious choice left: buy it out. Apparently, that’s exactly what Ladbrokes are up to now, as it’s rumored they’re in talks to acquire rival 888. According to the Sunday Telegraph, an offer has already been made, one of £70 per share. Representatives of both companies were quick to point out that nothing was in the books yet regarding the possible takeover. The two companies have a history regarding purchase attempts. Back in 2006, Ladbrokes tried to buy 888, for around £470 million, quite a bit more than the current £240 million offer.

In other news: the LA Poker Classic will add a seniors’ event to its schedule. Only players over 50 will be allowed to take part in the $545 event, which takes place on February 23. According to tournament director Matt Savage, the event aims to allow these players to play within the style characteristic of their generation, untainted by online-poker inspired antics and new generation players. The event is one created for a smaller field, which means that the opportunity for success will definitely be there for seniors, more so than in any other live poker event.

Phil Hellmuth, everyone’s favorite Poker Brat will apparently get another chance to make a fool of himself on world-wide television.
According to a tweet of his own, the UB pro will take part in Dancing with the Stars. Whether or not he’ll manage to get voted off early, remains to be seen. Frankly, all he really needs to do is to be truly himself to potentially earn himself an early exit, and that shouldn’t be too difficult to pull off.
