Thursday saw the second edition of the popular MicroMillions kick off at PokerStars. No fewer than 6 events saw action on the first day of the Series and a massive 172,000 players registered for a shot at the prize-pools on offer, which means that the Series is indeed on the right path to beat the attendance numbers of its first edition.
Andre Coimbra of Team
PokerStars pro had previously announced that he would play in each and every one of the 100 MicroMillions events, and he did indeed play in all 6 of them on Day 1. Unfortunately for him, luck has thus far evaded him as he failed to cash in any of those 6 events.
Event #1 was the $0.011 NL Holdem Turbo event with rebuys. 56,870 players coughed up the almost insignificant buy-in in this one, creating a first-place prize of $7,332, which was picked up by a player known as cittadipace.
Thus far, the biggest prize was awarded by event #4, the $3.3 NL Holdem event with rebuys. Iwantbearich won this one, taking down a $18,566 reward.
The MicroMillions will continue to run all the way to July 22, when the action will peak in the Main Event, which is slated to offer a guaranteed prize-pool of $1 million.
In other news: Main Event Finalist Lee Watkinson is apparently quite an animal lover: a few years ago he rescued 2 chimps from a medical research and testing center, and he had cared for them until Thursday when the pair managed to kick open their cage door and proceeded to run wild through the neighborhood. Police had to shoot one of the chimps while the other one was tranquilized and eventually re-captured.
The funds that Watkinson used for the chip rescue had apparently come from his 2007 Main Event winnings.
In still other news: Sorel Mizzi has become an official endorser of vitamin supplement company Onnit Labs.
