The poker grapevine: Nacho Barbero wins LAPT Lima

PokerStars’ own Nacho Barbero won the Latin American Poker Tour’s Lima stop, defeating a starting field of 384 players on his way to the title. His win set a new record too: he became the first player to win back to back titles in the LAPT, a feat peerless even in the
EPT. Barbero won the Punta Del Este stop of the LAPT back in February too, following it up with a win in the Lima event a couple of days ago. This win netted the PokerStars pro a quarter million dollar prize.
Never content with amount of poker talent crammed onto its roster, team PokerStars is always recruiting new members. Obviously though, not everyone is eligible. The latest addition to the roster is Ville Wahlbeck, who has thus become the first Finnish pro representative of the biggest online poker room.
Whether Wahlbeck’s signing is an indication of PokerStars increasing interest in the Scandinavian online poker market, remains to be seen. One thing is certain though: Wahlbeck will have his team
PokerStars debut in the PokerStars Baltic Festival in Estonia, where he won the High Rollers’ event last year.
Phil Laak has broken the record for the most consecutive hours spent playing poker last week. He played for a pretty unbelievable 115 hours, blowing away Paul Zimbler’s record of 78 hours and 45 minutes set last September. Just to put the achievement into perspective for you: the record meant that Laak basically went Monday to Wednesday without any kind of decent shut-eye. It was even more impressive that during his record breaking run, Laak even managed to eke out a profit, half of which he’d already pledged to charity.
Believe it or not, there’s more to the poker world than the
WSOP these days (even though most of the media attention is focused on the Series). Poker After Dark will begin to air, on NBC, bringing viewers solid high stakes cash game action. Some of the biggest poker names are involved in the show: Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen, Phil Hellmuth, Eli Elezra and Tom Dwan will all be featured. The minimum buy-in featured was $100k, with a cap set to $250k. the betting structure featured is a $200/$400 one with a $100 ante.
