The Poker Grapevine – PPA Swings into Action in New Jersey

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has until Feb 4 to sign the online poker/gambling bill delivered by the State legislature onto his table into law. The Governor will go down one of three possible paths: he can sign the bill into law, he can let the Feb 4 deadline pass without doing anything, in which case the bill will automatically become law, or he can veto it. Christie has hinted that he may in fact go down the road of the veto again, not convinced that the said bill would in any shape or form help his state’s ailing economy.
With the showdown over the bill imminent, the PPA has decided to swing into action in New Jersey. According to the group, the only thing standing between the bill and the serious economic upturn it is supposed to bring about by re-vitalizing the State’s gambling industry is the Governor’s pen, even as the legislature has voted unanimously in its favor and even as the bill is supported by thousands of Garden State residents.

According to PPA executive director John Pappas, the bill would allow New Jersey to create thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenues. It would make the Garden State the focal point of a new 21st century industry as it would allow it to secure the presence of some of the most trusted and popular online poker brands like PokerStars. Although no official statement has been made in the matter, experts are quite certain that PokerStars’ announced acquisition of the Atlantic Club Casino hinges on Chris Christie’s signature as well. Rational Group, the company behind PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker is aiming to re-launch its online poker operations on the US market through the acquisition of a land-based operation.
