The poker grapevine – Tony G vs France

Apparently, Tony G has an unlimited number of public relations stunts up his sleeve. If anyone knows how to create a fuss around a poker event by inflating emotions, he has to be the guy. His latest such stunt took place at the Aviation Club de Paris, and it came in the shape of a €10k High Roller 6-person SNG, in which the G took on French players only. Gouga named the event Tony G vs France and said that through it he was out to prove that the French were the worst poker players in the world. Guess whom the railbirds rooted against in this one…
In the end, like the good villain that he is, Tony G faded away in 5th place, offering the home crowd the satisfaction of seeing him defeated, humiliated and sent home on his bike. Guillaume Darcourt, Bruno Fitoussi, Gabriel Nassif, Leonard Martin and Yann Courtet took part in Tony G’s Challenge. Courtet was the one responsible for Tony G’s demise. The event was eventually won by Nassif. Tony G played through the game in his usual style and at one point he gave one of the waiters a €1,000 tip for bringing him a drink.
In other news: over the weekend, Paris was also the scene of the European Poker Awards. Jake Cody walked away with the Rookie of the Year title. Liv Boeree was picked as Europe’s Leading Lady and James Bord took down the award for the best tournament performance.
Online poker players weren’t ignored either. Andreas Torbergsen was honored with the distinction of Internet Player of the Year. The Poker Personality of the Year was Tony G – for more than obvious reasons - and the Player of the Year title went to Jake Cody too.
Jared Huggins, the poker player who had lost it all and became homeless a while ago, will play in
PokerStars’ big Game as a Loose Cannon. He was apparently included thanks to the petition submitted by an online
poker forum community which decided to throw its support behind the beleaguered member.
