The Poker Grapevine – WPT Paris High Roller Event

The WPT’s Paris stop featured a €15k High Roller event too, and it created quite a bit of buzz when the two players who had battled it out heads-up last year made the heads-up stage yet again.
36 players coughed up the extremely steep buy-in to take part in the event, among them, Sorel Mizzi, last year’s runner-up and Freddy Deeb, last year’s winner. The registrants created a €521.1k prize-pool, which meant that the eventual winner would receive a €234,495 prize. The relatively small size of the starting field meant that both Deeb and Mizzi would stand a real chance to repeat their performances from last year.
Sure enough, both of them played well, and with 5 players remaining, Mizzi had the chip lead. Deeb wasn’t doing badly himself, and soon, the two players were once again staring down each-other heads-up in a repeat of last year’s final stage. This time though, Mizzi managed to exact some sweet revenge. The final hand of the event saw Deeb shove the last of his chips into the middle on a flop of J,5,6. Mizzi was quick to make the call, and tabled a dominating A,A which had a strangle-hold on Deeb’s A,Jo. The turn and the river didn’t change anything and Deeb picked up €130.2k for his second place.
In other news: the
PokerStars UKIPT (UK and Ireland Poker Tour) got rolling last week. The Main Event saw 718 players cough up the buy-in, thus creating a prize-pool of €348,230. Several ‘name’ players registered for the event, among them Jude Ainsworth, Andy Black, Liv Boeree, David Vamplew and Dominik Nitsche.
Rebecca McAdam played too: she finished 55th for a €975 prize. PokerStars’ own Jason Tompkins went into the final table with the chip lead. He eventually hit some rough waters and he was eliminated in 5th place.
Joeri Zandvliet walked away with the top prize of €83.5k. Zandvliet had earned his seat online through PokerStars.
