WCOOP 2011, Day 2 – Karamalikis Wins One

The second day of the 2011 WCOOP went down as quite probably the busiest one of the entire Series. No fewer than 5 players earned their championship stripes on Day 2. The reason why there were so many champions crowned, was that two 2-day events, both of which had kicked off on Sunday, came to an end.
Several ‘name’ players had deep runs in various events, but Jonathan Karamalikis was the one who took the laurels by winning Event #6, the $200 + $15 NL Holdem Turbo Event with Rebuys. The event offered a $500k guarantee, but the 1,589 participants combined buy-ins for a massive prize-pool of $1,094,600. The rebuys and the add-ons obviously contributed to the monster prize-pool as well.
Karamalikis wasn’t the only ‘name’ player to make a deep run in the event: Team PokerStars pros Shane Schleger and Marcin Horecki both finished within the top 100. Horecki ended up in 27th place. Owen Crowe and Greg Howard made deep runs as well, but they too missed the final table.

Going into the final stretch of action, Jonathan Jaffe had the chip lead with a stack of 3.4 million chips. Karamalikis had 1.1 million. As the final table action kicked off, all hell broke loose: everyone was relatively short-stacked at the table, so on every single hand, there was an all-in. 4kinghellll was the first player to be eliminated.
FrankThomas8 was the next player to hit the rail. His 8th place finish was worth a little more than $19k. ShippityShip bit the dust next, followed by George Pittas, who had begun the final table as one of the large stacks. The start-of-the-final-table chip leader, Jonathan Jaffe followed in 5th place. He picked up $51k for his efforts.
Martin Staszko fell in 4th, followed by lotos64 in 3rd. The heads-up battle between medmar and Karamalikis lasted for two hands.
The final hand of the event saw Karamalikis’ A,10 triumph over medmar’s K,8o. The Aussie pro picked up $179,569.

Stu Unger has the coolest glasess I've ever seen, with the exception of Gary Oldman's vampire shades in Dracula. I wonder if Stu wears them to be cool (which would be my motivation) or if he's protecting his uber brain from too much light.
