WSOP Main Event winners like to party, and with good reason. After all, they’re people who have just found out that provided they manage their newly acquired wealth wisely, they won’t ever meet any kind of financial difficulties in their lifetimes. Pius Heinz, the fresh winner of the November Nine doesn’t fit that mold though. Following his win, he got busy almost right away. He became the newest member of Team
PokerStars Pro, and he even found time to sit down with members of the press to discuss various issues about his win.
During the three-month plus hiatus from the wrapping up of the Main Event in July to the November Nine, Pius didn’t invest a whole lot of time in perfecting his game. He did go to the EPT’s Barcelona stop where he managed to win one of the side events. He acknowledges that the EPT side-event win did indeed gave him a much-needed confidence-boost. Other than that, he had Mike McDonald tutor him on the math aspects of massive final tables like the November Nine and that was about it. Strategy-wise, Heinz said he was just going to stick to what he had been doing before the November Nine.
In the beginning of his final table run, Heinz had a hard time picking up a hand. He had Aces two times but other than that he failed to land even a top pair past the flop. The extended drought did frustrate him a little bit – Heinz said.
The pace of the final table was quite surprising for him too, especially once the three-handed stage was reached.
The young German hadn’t played in a single WSOP event before the 2011 edition of the Series. He said his win was likely to ignite a poker boom in Germany. What kind of a poker ambassador he’ll be remains to be seen though.
