WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star – Day 1A Report

The Bay 101 Shooting Star has been one of the WPT’s most popular events for years. Taking place in San Jose, the
poker tournament features a rather enticing format: every table has a “shooting star” of its own, a poker pro who carries a $2.5k bounty. Given that the buy-in is $7.5k, the bounty represents a pretty decent chance to claw some of that money back without making it deep in the tournament itself. The player who manages to bounce the shooting star will also receive an autographed T-shirt.
Day 1A of this season’s San Jose stop saw 270 players belly up to the tables. When the day was called, 109 of them were still standing, having had their tickets punched for Day 2. After 10 levels of action, Andrew Lichtenberger rose to the occasion, grabbing the top spot with 341k chips to his name.
Stephen Bokor finished second with a stack of 274.2k chips. Brandon Rubie, Isaac Baron and Faraz Jaka made the top 10 as well.
Day 1A was a tough stretch for the shooting stars. Of the 26 bounty-carrying players 16 were sent to the rail. Phil Hellmuth was one of the stars who got bounced. He was joined on the sidelines by
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu, Michael Mizrachi, JC Tran, Shannon Shorr, Tony Dunst, Jason Mercier and Greg Mueller.
Despite his elimination, Hellmuth put together a rather decent run and only bit the dust during level 8 of the action, when Matt O’Donnell’s A,8o got the better of his 9,8o. Hellmuth will probably re-enter the fray on Day 1B though.
Negreanu was eliminated shortly after Hellmuth, sent to rail by Steve Dempsey.
Antonio Esfandiari, Mike Sexton and Erik Seidel on the other hand all managed to advance.
