WPT Grand Prix De Paris – Day 1B report

Posted by: James Carter. - Tue, 2010-05-11 06:20

The second Day 1 flight of the WPT’s Grand Prix de Paris yielded a starting field of 141 players, surpassing the mark of 106, set by Day 1A. The action lasted for 6 levels, into the early morning hours, as none of the players involved were keen on parting with their €10,000 buy-in. Eventually, it was Iulian Iacob who took the chip lead, having amassed a stack of 180k.
The Frenchman had been hovering around the top of the chip leader-board since the early stages of action, and he thrust himself into the lead on a pot he took off Casey Kastle. The hand was a very interesting one. With the board reading 5,4,2,8,K, rainbow, Iacob decided to shove all-in against Kastle. Having put around 20k into the pot, Kastle decided he’d save his remaining 5k and folded. Tommy Vedes ran into the same trap a few hands later. Holding 9d,9h in his pocket, Iacob couldn’t be bluffed out of a pot which had 4 hearts on the board. Vedes’ Ks,Jd was kept honest, and Iacob’s stack gained another nice thrust.

Ilan Boujenah finished second in chips to Iacob. He had amassed around 140k, hogging most chips towards the end of the day. The biggest pot he took down came from Jari Mahonen. Relegated to small –stack status, Mahonen thought it wise to shove all-in on a A,Jo he’d picked up. Boujenah made the call with pocket Ks and bounced the Finn, adding his chips to his stack.
Jonathan Layani and Theo Jorgensen had also had great Day 1B runs, together with Eric Sadoun. All the players managed to break the 100k chip barrier.
PokerStars’ Isabelle Mercier and Alex Kravchenko also survived the day, albeit on more modest stacks.

Crippled after his above mentioned confrontation with the eventual chip leader, Casey Kastle couldn’t hang on. He hit the rail together with John Juanda, Freddy Deeb and Bertrand Grospellier.

Day 1B set the record straight as far as the total number of participants and prize-pool size were concerned. The 247 players, combined buy-ins for a €2.3 million prize-pool, which will be distributed among the top 27 finishers.
The winner’s share of the deal will be a massive €633,902.
