WPT Grand Prix de Paris – Day 2 report

Posted by: Randy Williams - Thu, 2010-05-13 15:06

127 survivors returned to the tables of the Aviation Club De France for the second day of the WPT’s Grand Prix de Paris poker tournament. Of the Day 1A and Day 1B survivors, Fabrice Tuil had the most chips. His stack 204,600 chips large, he was the only one who’d managed to break the 200k barrier. Iulian Iacob wasn’t that far behind though. When it was all said and done on Day 2 however, none of these two guys would be standing at the top. The role of the provisional chip leader went to Antoine Amourette who amassed a stack of 489,400 chips.

The fact that they saw the chip lead slip their grasps meant little for Iacob and Tuil though. At the day’s end, they were right were they wanted to be: close to the top of the leader board, with better than healthy stacks. They both accumulated chips nicely throughout the day. Iacob finished 2nd overall with 474,700 chips and Tuil ended up with about 280k.
Two other players who had exceptional Day 2 runs were PokerStars’ Arnaud Mattern and Theo Jorgensen. Mattern finished near the top too, with 360,100 chips. A large portion of his chips were acquired towards the end of the day, when he won a 3-handed pot against Mikhail Smirnov and Nicolas Dervaux. The fireworks were set off by Smirnov on a 9s, 8d, 4c board. In response to the Russian’s bet, Dervaux shoved all-in, followed by a shove by Mattern. After some thought, the Russian made the call too. Mattern had 10s, 8s for the middle pair and flush draw, against Smirnov’s pocket Ks and Dervaux’s pocket Js. The turn landed an 8 to give Mattern a set and the river fell an irrelevant 2d, which cemented the situation in the PokerStars pro’s favor.

Antoine Amourette, the chip leader got his stack from Jerome Zerbib towards the end of the day. Zerbib had pocket rockets on an all-heart flop against Amourette’s 9h, 7h. The turn and the river proved irrelevant in regards to the outcome of the hand and Amourette assumed the position of the chip leader.
Anthony Lellouche and Alex Kravchenko also survived to move on to day 3 of the poker tournament.
The same couldn’t be said about Allan Baekke, Freddy Deeb and Sorel Mizzi.
