WPT World Championship event: David Williams wins

The 6th day of theWPT’s World Championship event saw the best of the best return to the tables of the Bellagio to battle down the home stretch towards to the title. The official final table of the event included names like David Williams, David Benyamine and Eric Baldwin. These were the guys who started the final table run with the biggest stacks.
John O’Shea, Billy Baxter and Shawn Buchannan also made the final table, unlike the Prince of Poker, Scotty Nguyen and Ultimate Bet’s Phil Hellmuth, who just missed out.
The official chip leader heading into the final table was Benyamine, but Full Tilt’s French pro barely had an ante of an advantage over Williams, who in turn had about 2 BBs over Baldwin.

The 10 player field which kicked off the poker tournament action on Day 6 took almost 10 hours to whittle down to the final 6. Because most of the stacks at the table were deep and the players behind the stacks rather skilled and experienced, the battle was one of attrition. Cliff Josephy was the first one to drop, and it took a pretty nasty beat to get him out of the way. His boat got crushed by Williams’ straight flush for the bust. Nikolai Evdakov busted out next, followed by none other than Scotty Nguyen in 8th place. Phil Hellmuth’s elimination set the table for Day 7, David Williams the guilty party for the UB pro’s demise.

On day 7, the 6 final table contenders got together for the home stretch. The battle would be a relatively short one for John O’Shea, whose shortish-stack meant that he would have to make a move early. Sure enough he did, and as a result of it he hit the rail in 6th place. Billy Baxter followed him shortly, unable to put his chips to good use.
David Benyamine was the next casualty. Shawn Buchannan was the one guilty for the Full Tilt Poker’s pro’s exit from the poker tournament. Benyamine picked up a pretty handsome $329k for his 4th place though.
David Williams took out Buchannan next and the heads-up stage was set. Williams had control of this confrontation all through. He held the largest stack and never gave his advantage up. The final hand saw his pocket 2s triumph over Baldwin’s Ah,5h for the $1.53 million top prize.
