WSOP 2010 Day 16 – Ashby and Barch: two more champs crowned

Day 16 of the 2010 WSOP was a truly eventful one. Two more champions earned their gold bracelets, the ladies’ event rolled on and another $10k World Championship event got going.
Event #20, the $1,500 PL Omaha one was responsible for the first WSOP champ of the day. John Barch won his first WSOP bracelet in this event, taking home a $256,919 prize with it.
The final table of the poker tournament saw Nenad Medic start with the chip lead. John Barch was second, but he relentlessly chipped away at Medic’s advantage, until he eliminated him in 4th place.
Despite the lull that preceded 4-handed play, the final stretch of the event was a true sprint. Shortly after Medic’s elimination, Barch proceeded to knock out Trai Dang in 3rd, and in the very next hand, he disposed of his last challenger, Klinghammer Thibaut too.

Event #21, the $1,500 7-Card Stud event, had all the railbirds keeping their eye on Sorel Mizzi. In the end, Mizzi came up short though, as Richard Ashby clinched the title, the bracelet and the $140,467 first prize. A cash game specialist, Ashby was the embodiment of pure efficiency at the final table. He didn’t exactly make waves, but he did just enough to get by. Ashby defeated Christine Pietsch heads-up for the win.

In the meantime, the $1,000 Ladies NL Holdem Championship event rolled on. 136 ladies bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the day. When the dust settled, only 9 were still standing, the final table all set for the last day of the event. Sidsel Boesen will start the final table with the largest stack of chips.
Event #23, the $2,500 Short Handed Limit Holdem event, saw Al Barbieri rise to the top as 12 players remained in contention at the end of the day. Pretty much all the other “name” pros hit the rail already.

Event #24 was the third $1,000 NL Holdem special of the Series. As anticipated, a massive field of 1,931 players showed up for the first of two day 1 flights. PokerStars’ Arnaud Mattern and Veronica Dabul both survived the day.

Event #25, the $10,000 Omaha Hi/Lo split 8 or better World Championship event got underway on Day 16 as well. The 212 players who coughed up the buy-in for this one were all top class pros, looking to add a bracelet to their trophy-case as well as a top prize of $488,237.
