WSOP 2010 day 23 – Papola and Velador shine

Day 23 of the 2010 WSOP was a quite eventful one. Two players earned their bracelets again. Jeffrey Papola pocketed his in the $5,000 NL Holdem 6-max event, and Jose-Luis Velador triumphed in the $2,500 PL Holdem/Omaha event, besting a final day field which included Phil Ivey.
The final day of Event #33, the $5,000 NL Holdem 6-max one, saw Erick Lindgren bow out in 6th place, much to the disappointment of the numerous railbirds who would’ve loved to see him shoot to the top. Lindgren fell victim to Men Nguyen, who then made it all the way to the heads-up sage, where he took on the eventual winner, Jeffrey Papola, in a 4-hour long bout. Papola emerged with the win, but this latest achievement put Nguyen into a tie with Mizrachi and Dempsey for the WSOP Player of the Year title.
Papola had finished 2nd in he $2,500 NL Holdem 6-max event only four days earlier. This time, he took home $667,443.

Event #33, the $2,500 PL Holdem/Omaha one, generated some vivid interest on account of the fact that it had Phil Ivey belly up to the tables on its final day. When the dust settled though, Jose-Luis Velador would be the talk of the day. He disposed of all his opponents in a rather dominant not to mention swift way, pocketing the WSOP gold, together with the 260,517 prize. Velador was also the one personally responsible for ending Ivey’s quest for yet another bracelet.

Event $34, the $1,000 Seniors’ NL Holdem World Championship event, saw the record starting field whittle down to the final 3 tables on its day 2. Michael Minetti shot past the 1 million chip mark to settle in the chip lead. Carlos Pianelli was hot on his tail though. A total of 23 players will return for Day 3 action.

The $10k Heads-up NL Holdem World Championship rolled on as well. 3 more rounds of heads-up bouts were logged, at the end of which 8 players remained, including PokerStars’ Alexander Kostritsyn, Ludovic Lacay, Kido Pham and Vanessa Rousso.
With all eyes on her, Vanessa Rousso will take on Ernst Schmejkal in the next round.

Day 23 saw another $1,000 NL Holdem Special kick off. Over 2,000 players showed up for event #36 on its day 1A. The breakneck pace of NL Holdem action continued in this poker tournament, thus, by the end of the first day 1 flight, only 298 players remained in contention.
Scott Montgomery is the current chip leader with over 75k chips. Liv Boeree and Neil Channing also finished with healthy stacks.
