WSOP 2010 Main Event - day 1D

Day 1d – the last of the 4 scheduled day 1 flights - carried special significance for the
2010 WSOP Main Event organizers. The 2,391 players who showed up for this bout, rounded the total number of participants to 7,319 players, falling only short of the record-setting 2006 Big Dance, when Jamie Gold came out on top of a 8,773 player starting field.
The size of the eventual winner’s share was also determined. The November 9 winner would walk away with $8,944,138, which – considering the dire times poker in particular and the global economy in general are going through – is a hell of a lot better than a poke with a sharp stick.
Day 1d of the
poker tournament was dominated by
PokerStars’ representatives. Jason Mercier had an excellent run, dominating his table all through the day and chipping up constantly. One exceptionally big pot – which bore the brunt of Mercier’s chip-ups – was one in which he shoved an extra 11,800 chips into the middle on the river of a board made up of 4,2,A,3,5, with 12,000 chips already in the middle. His opponent made the call, and Mercier took the monster pot.
He dropped some of his chips later on, but he still survived the final day 1 flight with a large stack.
Mercier’s Team PokerStars mates Vanessa Selbst, Humberto Brennes and Vanessa Rousso did well too.
The chip lead went to Steve Billirakis in the end though, who had accumulated a more then impressive stack of 187,150 chips.
The Team Pokerstars pros represent only a small fraction of the “name” pros who will return to do battle on day 2 of the event.
Frank Kassela will be back, as well as Phil Ivey who’ll be looking to make another deep Main Event run this year.
