WSOP 2011 – Brian Rast wins $1,500 PLHE Event

Day 12 of the 2011 WSOP saw 2 bracelets awarded, but unfortunately for Phil Hellmuth, who had been on the hunt for his 12th piece of WSOP jewelry in the $10k NL 2-7 Lowball World Championship event, none of them ended up in his possession. One went to Brian Rast who won the $1,500 PL Holdem event and one to Full Tilt Poker’s John Juanda who bested none other than the ex-UB pro heads-up, in the above said World Championship event.
The $1,500 PL Holdem event garnered a lot of attention on account of hearsay that the world would end if Allen Kessler won a WSOP bracelet. Kessler was playing on the final day of that event and he had a decent size stack too, so the odds of Apocalypse were rather substantial at the beginning of the day – for the believers at least.

10 players returned to the green felt on the final day of the $1,500 PLHE event. The goal was nothing more and nothing less than to play down to the bracelet and that’s exactly what they accomplished.
Brian Rast was the one who began the day with the largest stack, and he managed to take full advantage of the situation. He made it to the heads-up stage against none other than Allen Kessler. The two players started the heads-up stage nearly even in chips, and the relative stalemate lasted for quite a few hands until Rast managed to build up a bit of a lead. The final hand of the tournament saw an all-heart flop of A,3,5 fall. Kessler placed a shrewd check and then raised to 200k. Rast three-bet in response and Kessler pushed all-in, prompting a call from his opponent. Rast then showed Kh, 9h for the nut flush. Kessler had a 5c, 3c for the two pair, but he failed to hit any of his outs and Apocalypse has been avoided yet again. Rast picked up $227k for his efforts.
