WSOP APAC Event #2 – Day 1 Report

Sunday saw the second bracelet-awarding event of the WSOP APAC kick off. Event #2 was the AUD$1,650 PLO one, which saw 172 players hit its tables on its first and only day 1 flight. The field combined buy-ins to create a prize-pool of AUD$258k. A total of 8 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which 29 players were left standing.
Andrew Gaw finished the day with the largest stack of chips. He had 69.8k chips bagged. Most of Gaw’s chips came from Marvin Rettenmaier, towards the later stages of the action. The flop was Kh,2s,8h, when the chips of one of the players involved went into the middle.
Rettenmaier and Gaw bet/called a few more bets before showdown. On the turn, Gaw was way ahead with a flush and he maintained his lead through the river as well to scoop the pot.

The big news on Day 1 of the event was that Phil Ivey decided to finally belly up to the tables too. The player considered the best in the world by many had completely missed the first, NL Holdem Accumulator event, but he did decide to give it a go in event #2. His decision didn’t turn out to be an inspired one: he failed to make it through the day, busting out only a few hours after he showed up. By the time he pushed his last chips into the middle, he was nursing a short-stack. Although he was ahead of his opponent when the chips went into the middle, his foe made a flush before the end of the hand to send him to the rail empty-handed.
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu played in the event as well, and he failed to make the cut too. Eric Seidel and JC Tran hit the rail as well.
