WSOP APAC Event #3 – Phil Ivey Wins

Wednesday proved to be a historic day for the WSOP: Phil Ivey took down his ninth WSOP bracelet, tying Johnny Moss in 4th place on the all-time WSOP bracelet winners’ list. Ivey won the event after he bested Brandon Wong heads-up over the home dash of the tournament. The winner’s share of the prize-pool was AUD$51.8k, but the WSOP bracelet that came with it was probably worth several times more in the eyes of the winner at least.
Wong was rewarded with AUD$32k for his runner-up’s spot. Given the high profile nature of the event, it didn’t really come as a surprise that most of the final tablists were “name” competitors. Graeme Putt finished 3rd for AUD$22.4k, followed by PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu in 4th. Given the caliber of the players at the final table, it is quite probably a given that they all felt like losers for not being able to grab the bracelet.

Ivey was the player who had the largest stack of chips at the beginning of the day. Daniel Negreanu was well-stacked too. During the first PLO round of the day though, Wong was the one who scored the first elimination, sending Kevin Song to the rail.
Rob Campbell followed Song to the sidelines, sent there by the same Brandon Wong. Wong took over the early stage of the final table, getting rid of Daniel Negreanu in 4th and Graeme Putt in 3rd. The heads-up stage of the action raged on for several hours, and even through Wong had held the moral advantage in the beginning, Ivey fought back unfazed like a true heavyweight. The chip lead changed hands numerous times, but it was Ivey who eventually gained the upper hand. The last hand of the event was a 2-7 triple draw lowball one, which saw Ivy deliver the coup de grace.
