WSOP APAC Main Event – Day 1 Report

Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu have drawn quite a bit of attention at the 2013
WSOP APAC, where the two friends even made a final table: in event #3, they were both there during the final stretch. Ivey went on to win, while Negreanu was forced to settle for a deep run. The first day of the WSOP APAC’s Main Event found the two in the spotlight again. Negreanu was the one in fact who finished the first day of action with the largest stack.
390 players bellied up to the tables of the Main Event, successfully eclipsing the player turnout for the first ever edition of the WSOPE, which tipped the scales at 362.
Although Negreanu played well through the day, the end of the day chip lead fell into his lap when he took down a massive pot from Jim Collopy towards the end of the action. Negreanu was the one who started applying pressure on a flop of 6s,8s,9h. Collopy was the only one to tag along via a call. The Jh fell on the turn and Negreanu fired another bullet. Collopy raised him and he made the call to see the 6d fall on the river. Negreanu sprung the trap by checking and Collopy walked right into it, making a large-enough bet to get the
PokerStars pro all-in. Negreanu didn’t think twice about making the call. He then tabled pocket Js for the boat. Collopy had Q,10 for the straight, but it was no good.
Ivey himself spent a part of the day in the lead. At one point during the day, he took a massive pot off Jeremy Ausmus and another player. Brandon Wong, Mike Watson and Erik Seidel finished the day with healthy stacks too. Sam Trickett and Barry Greenstein will return to the tables as well.
