The Main Event of the
WSOP APAC is in the books and Daniel Negreanu is the one who can brag about having won it. The
PokerStars pro took down an AUD$1,038,825 top prize, not to mention the WSOP bracelet, his 5th, which took him no less than 5 years to hunt down.
When all was said and done, Negreanu stood victorious atop an initial starting field of 405 players. The home stretch of the event wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for Negreanu either: he had to best a final table which featured players like Russell Thomas, Winfred Yu and Benny Spindler and let’s not forget about Antonio Esfandiari too, who was bounced on the final table bubble.
Negreanu’s 5th WSOP bracelet has tied him with people like John Juanda, Scotty Nguyen, Jeff Lisandro and the legendary Stu Ungar.
The first player to be ejected from the final table was Russel Thomas, who had still held the largest stack before the final 15.
George Tsatsis was the one responsible for his elimination.
After the dinner break, Mikel Habb bit the dust as well: he was bounced by Winfred Yu, whose A,10 got the better of his pocket 10s. Habb was the first one to earn a 6-figure reward for his efforts.
Benny Spindler, the start of the day chip leader, was the next victim. Kahle Burns was the one who sent him to the rail. Burns himself was sent packing next, followed by George Tsatsis in 4th. Negreanu was the one who eliminated Tsatsis and Winfred Yu too in 3rd place, thus securing a 10-1 chip advantage going into the heads-up stage of the tournament. Daniel Marton did fight back though before the final hand of the event saw Negreanu’s pocket 2s bust his As, 7s for the win.
