WSOP-C Harvey's Lake Tahoe – Day 1 report

Despite nasty weather, no fewer than 246 players showed up for the first day of the WSOP-C’s Lake Tahoe event. 16 levels could be squeezed into the first day of action but that was enough to decimate the field, and at the end of the day only 51 hopefuls had their chips bagged to return on day two. Dan Black was the one who clinched the chip lead, having amassed a stack of 329,500 chips.
Due to the harsh weather and road conditions, many of the big-name players who were expected to show up failed to do so. Chris Ferguson won the event last year, so he was obviously among those who should have participated. The Full Tilt Poker pro didn't register though, unlike Jason DeWitt, Aron Kanter, Andrew Malott and Tom Franklin, who dutifully coughed up their $1,500 buy-ins.

Unfortunately, none of these players made it past the day one hurdle. Aron Kanter was probably the unluckiest of them all, eliminated thanks to a massive bad beat. Kanter had a7h, 9h in his pocket, and getting it all in on a board of 10,9,7,9 was obviously a no-brainer for him. He did get the pot filled too, and he was about to triple up when George Reese made the call, holding A,9. All Kanter had to fade was a three outer, but an A landed on the river, giving Reese a bigger boat and sending Kanter to the rail against all odds.

The 51 survivors were probably glad that virtually no name players survived the first day of action. Steve Brown is the player currently second in the chip counts, with a stack of 305,400 chips. Black and Brown were the only two players who managed to take their stacks over the 300,000 chip mark. Day two kicks off at high noon on Monday.
