WSOP PoY Race – Negreanu Early Leader

The implications of the recently concluded WSOP APAC were deep and far reaching, not only in terms of the bracelets and the prizes awarded, but in regards to WSOP Player of the Year leader board points too. It turns out that even though the 2013 WSOP is still a way away, the above said PoY race is already hot. In Melbourne, several players picked up valuable points and the winner of the Main Event, Daniel Negreanu was the one who picked up the most. Thanks to his WSOP APAC efforts, he’s currently at the top of the leader board with 408.4 points.
He’s even managed to build up a rather substantial lead over current second-place man Daniel Marton, who’s only been awarded 252 points. Brian Piccioli – another bracelet winner – and Winfred Yu made the top of the leader board as well. Aaron Lim and Jonathan Karamalikis accumulated a substantial number of points too. The top 10 is wrapped up by Benny Spindler.

For Negreanu, being atop the WSOP PoY leader board isn’t exactly something new. As a matter of fact, the PokerStars pro won the title back in 2004, when he took down one of his 5 bracelets and made the final table in no fewer than 5 events. In the WSOP APAC, he didn’t just earn points for his Main Event victory. He also picked up a handful for his 4th place finish in the $2.2k Mixed Game event. Everything accounted for, Kid Poker left Australia a very happy camper indeed, as attested by his jubilant tweets.
If he won the PoY title again, Negreanu would become the first player ever to add two such prestigious accomplishments to his trophy case. The select club of WSOP PoY winners includes names like Jeffrey Lisandro, Allen Cunningham and Ben Lamb.
