WSOPE – Day 12 Report

The 2012 WSOPE Main Event entered its 3rd day of action on Day 12 of the Series. 77 players bellied up to the tables of the Majestic Barriere Casino at the beginning of the day, all of them aiming to make the final 24. At the end of the day, that objective had indeed been reached, as Joseph Cheong clinched the chip lead, while several other ‘name’ players managed to hang on. Phil Hellmuth, Liv Boeree and Jason Mercier were all among the survivors. Day 3 was also the day when the money-bubble would burst, so 29 of the 77 players would not only not make it to Day 4, they would go home with absolutely nothing to show for their efforts. Jean Robert Bellande, Jonathan Little and Alex Bilokur were all among the ill-fated 29.
The official bubble-boy was none other than October Nine member Jesse Sylvia. He was pushed out by the eventual chip leader, Joseph Cheong, after his Ad, 9d fell to the latter’s pocket 10s.
Once the bubble burst, the pace of the action picked up again and players began hitting the rail in larger numbers. Justin Bonomo was one of the victims of the post-bubble rush. He was joined on the rail by
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu, who picked up €20.1k for his efforts. Eugene Katchalov did better, but not a whole lot better. His dingy ran ashore in 40th place, landing him a €21.2k payday. At that point, the reigning champion of the event, Elio Fox, was still in contention, but not for long.
Fox shoved all-in with an A,8 and got called by Jason Mercier who had A,Q in his pocket. Fox never managed to catch up, and the odds of a repeat performance on his part quickly dissipated as he headed to the rail.
JC Alvarado and Bertrand Grospellier were eliminated on Day 3 too. Grospellier made it all the way to 25th before hitting the rail.
