WSOPE – Day 5 Action

Day 5 of the World Series of Poker Europe saw tons of action and a ‘name’ player repay the attention granted to him by fans and the media during the run-up days of the Series. That player was none other than the winner of the biggest poker tournament in history, the $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop, Antonio Esfandiari. Esfandiari’s win came in event #2, the €1.1k NL Holdem event. Although he ‘only’ took home €126k this time, the win carried special significance for the Magician as it gave him his third WSOP bracelet and propelled him into the lead of the WSOP Player of the Year race to boot.
As if driven by the Magician’s green felt success, droves of high player professionals descended on Cannes on Day 4, looking to grab their share of WSOPE glory. PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu showed up, together with Mike McDonald, Mike Watson and Kyle Julius.

The final day of event #2 saw 15 players return to the tables, all looking to make it all the way to the finish line. The first one to bust out of the poker tournament was Casey Kastle. By the time the final table was reached, Esfandiari had quite a choke-hold on the chip lead and appeared well on his way to the title. There were no fewer than 5 local players who stood between him and the title though. Esfandiari eliminated Chris Karr in 6th place, to keep his momentum going.
The final stretch of the event saw Esfandiari go up against Remi Bollengier. When the heads-up bout began, Esfandiari had a slight lead over his opponent and he exploited that slight advantage masterfully. The last hand of the tournament saw his Q,8o best his opponent’s Qs, 7s.

Event #3, the €5.3k PLO one, saw the 25 survivors who returned to the tables play down to the final 9.
Another event which saw action was event #4, the €3,250 NL Holdem Shootout one, which saw its own field play down to the final 20.
