WSOPE – Grospellier on Top after Main Event Day 1B

Day 10 of the 2012 WSOPE was an unusually quiet one. There was only one event on the schedule, but that one was an important one indeed: the second day 1 flight of the Main Event.
205 players bellied up to the tables on Day 1B, taking the total starting field to 420. After the day’s green felt hostilities, only 115 players were left in contention, with
PokerStars’ own Bertrand Grospellier leading the Day 2 charge. Being the Main Event, the
poker tournament attracted a high number of high profile poker professionals. The locals were once again massively represented. Roger Hairabedian, the winner of one WSOPE 2012 event and the deep finisher of another one, played on Day 1B, together with Guillaume Darcourt, he who once sported a striking neon-pink hairdo. Unfortunately, none of the two players managed to safely navigate the treacherous waters of the second day 1 flight.
Marvin Rettenmaier was also among the early victims, together with John Tabatabai.
The two players who still have a heads-up affair to finish in the €10,450 Mix Max NL Holdem event, Brandon Cantu and Jonathan Aguiar, both played on Day 1B too. None of them managed to make it to the final whistle though, so they will be able to return to their odds and ends on Monday.
Another notable victim on Day 1B was Arnaud Mattern.
Timothy Adams on the other hand enjoyed an excellent run. He started off well and he eventually finished with 134.4k chips. Daniel Negreanu had an even better day. He was forcing players to fold and was busting them left and right, on his way to a 137.5k chip finish.
Phil Hellmuth, the target of many a practical joke and ill-inspired verbal assault these days, managed to break into the top 10 as well. He finished the day with a stack of 116k chips.
The prize pool of this year’s Main Event exceeded the €4 million mark. The winner of the event will take home more than €1 million.
