WSOPE – More Day 8 Action

While Day 3 of event #5, the €10,450 Mix Max NL Holdem one, was quite possibly the highlight of the 8th day of the Series, drawing countless ‘name’ talents and showcasing a variety of spectacular heads-up matches, there was more to day 8: event #6, the €1,650 Six-Handed PLO one played through its second day. The objective for the day was the reaching of the final table, an objective which was indeed accomplished on time and on target. It took the players seven levels to reach the home stretch of the event, but they persevered. Five players had chips bagged at the end of the Day 2 hostilities, among them Andrew Lichtenberger and Ana Marquez.

At the beginning of the poker tournament, 206 players had paid up the buy-in. Of them, only 26 made it to day 2, so there was quite a bit of attrition on the first day indeed. As soon as the second day of action kicked off, several players bit the dust: Brandon Crawford and Narendra Banwari were among the early victims. Greg Merson - he of October Nine fame - made the early casualty list as well. Day 2 saw an important milestone fall behind the field too: the money bubble. The official bubble-boy turned out to be none other than David Benyamine. At that point in the tournament, PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu was the short stack, but Benyamine wasn’t much better off either. He saw a flop of Ad, 3s, 5s with an Ah,Qs,Jd,9d and when his only remaining opponent checked, he decided to make the ultimate move. Antoine Pacaut had a set against his top pair though and he made the call, putting Benyamine into a precarious position, Although he picked up a two pair on the river, Benyamine failed to bounce back, thus he left empty-handed after all.
Andy Frankenberger became the final table bubble-boy later in the day. Aku Joentausta was the one who sent him packing.
