2011 WSOP – Darren Woods wins $2.5k Limit Holdem 6-max Event

12 players returned to action on day 3 of the $2.5k Limit Holdem 6-max event, some of them looking to win a bracelet, others looking to just hang around and see what the future brings. Matt Matros (the pro who plays at
Full Tilt Poker and
PokerStars), who started the day on a short-stack, was one of these guys. He was the only one who had won a bracelet before, so he already knew what WSOP triumph tasted like. Unfortunately for him, his short-stack proved to be his downfall: he was the first victim of the final day of action.
The start of the day chip leader was Kim Nguyen, only the 3rd woman to make a final table at this year’s
WSOP. Alexander Kuzmin was there too though, and his healthy stack was only second to Nguyen’s by a tiny margin.
As the final table action progressed, Nguyen kept achieving remarkable feats. When it came down to the heads-up stage, she became the second woman this year to play heads-up for the title. She even held the lead going into the final stretch of the tournament against Darren Woods, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
It only took Woods a few hands to strip Nguyen of her lead, and despite the fact that she played well, Nguyen’s kept bleeding chips. Eventually, she found herself with only 200k, and decided to make a decisive move: she picked up a Kc,2c and pushed all-in, only to be called by Woods who had 4h,2h. Once again, it was Nguyen who had the better hand before the board fell, and yet again, she was going to end up disappointed. The flop fell Kh, 4d, 6h, giving both players a pair and a 4-card flush to Woods. That flush would never materialize, but the 4 which fell on the river after the Js on the turn, sealed the deal for good.
Woods picked up $213k for his efforts.
