2011 WSOP – Day 1c Report

Day 40 of the 2011 WSOP was the first one that being side-event free, allowed players to focus exclusively on the task at hand: the Main Event. The first two day 1 flights of the 2011 Big Dance were downright disappointing as far as the volume of registration was concerned. Day 1c managed to right those wrongs though and then some: 2,181 players showed up for the final day 1 flight, surpassing the player totals from Day 1a and Day 1b put together.
Apparently, most of the ‘name’ pros chose to wait till the last opportunity to get going. The day 1c field was more pro-heavy than usual. James Akenhead, Jason Somerville, Jason Mercier, Pokerstars’ Daniel Negreanu, Karina Jett, Hoyt Corkins, Erik Seidel, Andy Bloch and Full Tilt Poker’s David Benyamine all chose to join the action on day 1c.
Phil Hellmuth, once renowned for his extravagant and often borderline circus-like entrances, showed up as well, albeit this time only in a plain black suit with a ESPN microphone in hand. The Poker Brat had a pretty tough day, and even though he managed to survive, he did so on a stack of only 11,800 chips, which may not guarantee him a long tournament life on day 2.

Reigning WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel saw action as well. He was seated at the feature table, and even though he did manage to finish the day on a decent stack, he didn’t find the going easy at all. At one point, his stack had whittled down to 15k chips. Eventually, he finished with 41k.

The story of the day was no doubt the presence at the tables of Shaun Deeb’s 91 year old grandmother, Ellen Deeb. Unfortunately for the oldest player of the field, she busted out when an opponent’s flopped set bested her flopped two pair.
At the end of the day, Kevin Song was the one who had the largest stack. Adam Junglen finished 10th. JP Kelly, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and Dan Shak survived on healthy stacks too.
