2011 WSOP – John Juanda Bests Phil Hellmuth for $10k Lowball Bracelet

There was plenty of action on day 12 of the 2011 WSOP, but the eyes of the poker world were on event #16, the $10k NL 2-7 Lowball World Championship event. The reason was a simple one: Phil Hellmuth played in that event, and he looked poised to go all the way in it, to secure his 12th bracelet.

The ex-UB Poker pro started the day 7th in chips, and against opposition which included Full Tilt Poker’s John Juanda, ex-PokerStars pro Greg Raymer, Nick Shulman, David Baker and Richard Ashby. It was not going to be easy for the Poker Brat to get past those guys, but he obviously wanted to prove his critics wrong. He made it all the way to the heads-up stage, where he faced John Juanda. He had done so well at the final table that when things boiled down to heads-up play, he had a 3-1 chip lead. Juanda is not known as one of the best lowball players in the world for nothing though. He gradually fought his way back into the game and it wasn’t long before he took the chip lead. The end came when Hellmuth’s stack fell to around 600k. The last hand of the tournament saw Hellmuth stand pat and shove all-in, holding Q,10,8,5,2. Juanda had J,6,3,2,8 for the winning Jack-low and the tournament was over. Thus, instead of Hellmuth picking up his 12th WSOP bracelet, Juanda picked up his 5th, depriving the Poker Brat from a whole lot of bragging ammo.

In other news: the first of the $1,500 NL Holdem events of the 2011 Series kicked off on Day 12, attracting a starting field of 3,157 players, soaring past last year’s player numbers by a massive 1,065 participants. Several “name” players showed up to play in this one, including Faraz Jaka, Humberto Brenes, Michael Mizrachi, Jason Mercier and Jon Turner.
