2011 WSOP Main Event – Day 1b Report

Day 1b of the 2011 WSOP Main Event was a bit disappointing for industry pundits: only 985 players showed up, 504 less than for day 1b of the 2010 Main Event. The starting field only managed to surpass the Day 1a yield by a feeble 88. One of the first notable victims of the day was Michael Mizrachi. The Grinder, who used to play online at PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, but who’s mostly known in poker circles for his incredible 2010 run, when he managed to win the $50k Players’ Championship Event and made the final table of the Big Dance afterward, took a few early hits to his stack on day 1b.
He didn’t go down without a fight, but he never seemed to be able to find any kind of traction once his stack had dipped below 8.5k chips. Eventually, down to his last 5k, he was forced to commit. He picked up a Kc,10c and shoved all-in. Robin Fisher made the call with pocket 9s and the flop fell Q,J,7 rainbow to give Mizrachi an open-ended straight draw. The J on the turn and the 4 on the river dashed his Main Event hopes though.

Ben Lamb didn’t start out on more favorable terms either. Before he knew it, he had donated half his stack to various players. He quickly switched into hyper-aggressive mode though and after successfully getting away with a few all-in bluffs, he was back in the books again. Not only that, from there on out he continued chipping up, shooting past the 200k mark at one time. He eventually finished with a stack of 188k, well enough to give him the chip lead for the day.
Other notables to finish near the top were Guillaume Rivet, who ended up in 10th place. Carlos Mortensen finished on a healthy stack as well. Sam Stein and Nicholas Chouity made it past the day 1b hurdle too.

Justin Smith, Rep Porter, PokerStars’ Andre Akkari and Erica Schoenberg failed to advance.
