2011 WSOP Main Event – Day 2B Report

Day 1D’s chip leader, Ben Lamb re-emerged on Day 2b of the WSOP’s Main Event, never letting up the pressure and never missing a single opportunity to add to his stack. By the day’s end, he had a stack of 551k chips, leading the field into day 3. Not only did he manage to clinch the overall chip lead, he became one of only two players (the other one was Kevin Saul with a stack of 542k chips), who climbed above the 500k chip mark.
Those who are beginning to think of Lamb as a lean, mean poker playing machine may just be right: he’s already won a bracelet this year, he had a second place finish and he finished in the money in two other events.

Kevin Saul, who used to play online at PokerStars, was the other highly successful player of the day. Saul said his goal was to advance one hand at a time, one day at a time, always aiming to survive to the next level. Saul himself has one major live poker title under his belt: in 2007, he won the WPT Bellagio Cup, for a prize of $1.3 million.

Joe Hachem found the going much tougher once he got moved to a table where Full Tilt’s Patrik Antonius played, together with Marvin Rettenmaier and Sam Trickett. Under such circumstances, the ex-Main Event champ bowed out before the end of the day. Another player to fail to make it past the day 2B hurdle was Jamie Gold: he was eliminated in one of the last few hands of the day. Since 2006, when he went all the way and won the biggest ever WSOP Main Event prize, Gold has found it impossible to reach the money in any of the WSOP events he played in. Mike Sexton, Mike Matusow and Barry Greenstein were also eliminated on Day 2B.
Wednesday is a day off for the Big Dance players. On Thursday, the survivors of the two day 2 fields will be combined into a single starting field on the official Day 3 of the event.
