The
2013 PCA, the opener of the poker season, has kicked off the other day with its $100k Super High Roller. The event drew a record number of participants so at this point it’s safe to say that the season has indeed gotten off to a great start. A total of 57 buy-ins were recorded, of which 10 were re-buys, so there were 47 actual players who joined the early frenzy. Players are allowed to re-buy right until the start of the second day, so the actual prize-pool is not yet know. What is known though is that of the 47 registrants only 37 earned a seat at a day 2 table.
One of the players who took advantage of the re-buy feature was Phillip Gruissem, who bounced back so well after biting the dust in his first try, that he finished the day with the largest stack.
Scott Seiver had a pretty good Day 1 as well: he finished with the second largest stack.
The field looked a bit like a Poker Hall of Fame inductees list. Phil Ivey played, together with Jason Mercier and Antonio Esfandiari, who’s apparently developed a special kind of love for Super High Rollers since his Big One for One Drop win last summer. All these above said players survived the first day. They will be joined at the tables by Bertrand Grospellier, Jonathan Duhamel and Vanessa Selbst.
Players who also re-bought and managed to stay in the running with their second bullets were Isaac Haxton, Tom Dwan and
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu. Players who re-bought and busted out twice were Paul Newey and Bryn Kenney.
Phil Hellmuth kicked off his first PCA on the wrong foot: he busted out and he hasn’t yet taken advantage of his re-buy option.
