The second (and last) day 1 flight of the
2013 PCA made up for the relatively shallow player-pool of Day 1A. A massive 649 player starting field coughed up the buy-in on Day 1B, taking the grand total for the event to 987 entries.
Needless to say, Day 1B of the
poker tournament saw more than a handful of “name” players belly up to the tables. Among them was Michael Phelps, who may not have earned his fame at the green felt, but he was one of the recognizable faces nonetheless. Phelps had a good Day 1B and he survived behind a decent-size stack. Another non-poker celebrity who played on Day 1B was Jason Alexander, the actor behind the George Costanza character from Seinfeld. Unlike Phelps, Alexander had a relatively short day at the green felt and he will not be back on Day 2.
The player who finished the day with the largest stack of chips was Ashton Griffin, who managed to amass 253.7k chips. Griffin was followed in the chip counts by none other than Michael Mizrachi.
Other players who survived the day on decent stacks were Steve O’Dwyer and Olivier Busquet. Jake Cody, PokerStars’ newest Team Online addition, managed to make it past the day 1B hurdle as well. He will be joined at the tables on day 2 by Nacho Barbero, Greg Merson, Phil Hellmuth and Matt Salsberg. Unlike in his Super High Roller attempt, Hellmuth managed to make it past the first day of action this time.
Phil Ivey had a great start to his day 1B. He was actually the one who sent
PokerStars’ French pro, Bertrand Grospellier, to the rail. Ivey finished the day with only a meager stack though, after he had dropped the majority of his chips to Owen Crowe.
