Online Poker action – Sahamies dominates

The last couple of weeks have seen some pretty hectic high stakes online poker action at PokerStars and at
Full Tilt Poker too, despite the absence of the usual catalyst for such bustle: Isildur1. This time, it was Ilari Sahamies who carried the bulk of the newsreel-worthy material, lifting around $2 million off Tom Dwan and Cole South.
The Finn only put in about 10 hours of sleep over a 100 hour period according to his blog, and he got incredibly lucky in the process too, but at the end of it all, it was well worth it.
Tom Dwan had been on a pretty nice roll so far in 2010, but all that came to a screeching halt when he took on Sahamies at the $500/$1,000 PLO tables over the course of two days, in two separate sessions. The first of those resulted in a $900k loss for Dwan, and the second one in a $441k setback.
Having taken about $1.3 million from Dwan, Sahamies was in the zone. He proceeded to take on Cole South and sure enough, he booked another $181k win at the expense of the Cardrunners pro.
The match-up saw a pretty heated exchange of words between the two rivals too, at the end of a monster pot which South took down on account of connection problems for the Finn.
The one responsible for what turned out to be quite possibly the most significant online poker news of the past few weeks was
PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu though. Never one to put in extensive hours at the online nosebleed stakes, Negreanu logged some 3,300 hands of $100/$200 6-max NL Holdem at PokerStars. While those numbers may not be impressive for seasoned railbirds, given the fact that it’s Negreanu we’re talking about, they certainly are. The Canadian took down a $122k haul in his first session, but then lost around 73k in the second one. Could this be a part of PokerStars’ offensive to lure some of Full Tilt’s devout railbirds and
poker news writers over to its high stakes tables? It may well be.
Patrik Antonius made the news too, as he locked horns with Ashton Griffin at the long dormant HA tables, in an attempt to break the curse that’s been on him for the last couple of months. His bid was unsuccessful though as he ended up dropping $115k to Griffin.
