Online poker action – the Big Guns get going

Last week saw a huge uptick in nosebleed stakes cash game action both at PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker. The number of “name” players who took to the tables was truly impressive: Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Ilari Sahamies and Scott Palmer all saw action.
Sahamies has been off the Full Tilt Poker radar lately and even now when he chose to surface, he did it at
PokerStars under the moniker “Ilari FIN”. Down about $200k at Full Tilt Poker thus far in 2011, the change of venue seems to have helped him lure Lady Luck back onto his side. At PokerStars, he played around 1,200 hands of $25/$50 and $100/$200 PLO against “LooneyGerbil” and Daniel Cates and he managed to eke out a $50k profit.
Having toned back seriously from his Full Tilt Poker heyday, the biggest pot that Sahamies played for was a $66,360 one. The hand which led to this pot started out with the usual preflop give and take. The flop fell 8,K,6 rainbow and after a couple of back and forth bets, the two ended up shoving everything into the middle. Sahamies had a set of Ks on the flop, and proceeded to improve to quad Ks on the turn. That was pretty much it as the river card was quite irrelevant in the wake of the 4th king.
The Patrik Antonius/Scott Palmer confrontation continued at
Full Tilt Poker and these guys spared no chips: no fewer than 9 of the pots they played for were above the $200k mark.
The highlight of the week was the Phil Ivey vs Gus Hansen battle though. Two of the greatest players that poker has ever seen, at one table is a railbird’s dream come true, and indeed, that was exactly what we were treated to at Full Tilt Poker’s $500/$1,000 Capped PLO tables. The most interesting pot of the session was a $80k (capped) one which ended up in Ivey’s possession, after he made a two pair on the river against Hansen’s counterfeited two pair.
