Player Numbers Up in Online Poker Weekend Guarantees

The WSOP always has a funny effect on the poker world: it generates interest, which in one way or another translates into increased player numbers online. Last weekend – the first of the 2011 WSOP – was no exception. The fact that PokerStars have moved their major events to an earlier time-slot may also have contributed somewhat, but the WSOP effect was clear as player numbers soared to pre-Black Friday levels.
The weekend tournament hegemony has been re-established at the top as well: the biggest winner of this weekend came from PokerStars Sunday Million. Diogene bested a starting field of 10,237 players, to hit the top and to pocket the $284k share of the winner. The total prize-pool was an impressive $2,047,400. There were no deals made at the top, which means that everyone got what they deserved, nothing more and nothing less.
The event produced no fewer than 4 6-figure winners out of the total of 7 who picked up such prizes over the weekend. Azazel1980 finished second for a $204k prize. Two more players finished in 6-figures: Royalize and Igor Kurganov, who picked up $143k and $102k respectively.

The Sunday Warm-up also yielded a more than respectable starting field: 5,456 players coughed up the $215 buy-in, creating a prize-pool of $1,091,200. The top two finishers made a deal during the heads-up stage, which left eventual winner kojocki with $155k. Second place man eamsie pocketed $141k for his efforts. None of the other players managed to break into 6-figure land.

At Full Tilt Poker, the 750k Guarantee managed to generate a minute layover of a few tens of thousands of dollars. The winner, el_klonkador, made a deal with second place man Gavin Ball. El_klonkador was the only one who pocketed a 6-figure prize. Ball was left with $87.4k, a rather smallish share of the $798,400 prize-pool.
Peter Traply played in this event, finishing 5th for $39k.
