The Online Poker Weekend – Niergarth Wins Sunday Million

Despite all the WSOP action going on Down Under, the online poker majors registered massive starting fields yet again. Although “name” players always hit the tables of the biggest major of all, PokerStars’ Sunday Million, it is not exactly a frequent occurrence for one of these players to actually win it all, yet this weekend, that’s exactly what happened. The biggest online poker tournament winner of the weekend was none other than Nick Niergarth, who didn’t take down a half-bottomed top prize either: he made no deals on his way to the top of the Sunday Million.
The event drew a starting field of 7,861 players, generating a prize-pool of $1,572,200, well above and beyond the initial $1 million guarantee. Niergarth bested a player known as LFCRED heads-up to take home the $235.8k, the full share of the winner. The runner-up pocketed $172.9k. “iisZet” finished 3rd for $117.9k. There were no other players who managed to break into 6-figure territory prize-wise. Niergarth was pretty much the only high-profile player who managed a deep run in the event.

The Sunday Warm-Up saw 3,432 players belly up to its tables. This tournament beat its guarantee handily too: the resulting prize-pool was a $686.4k one. There weren’t any deals made in this event either: the winner, FOO-92, took home the entire projected share of the winner, $107.7k. No one else finished with a 6-figure haul in the event, the share of the runner-up was $80.3k. David Hilton was the highest finishing pro in the event: his 11th place was worth $4.1k.

Full Tilt Poker’s $350k managed to cover its guarantee as well. The 1,803 players combined buy-ins to create a $360.6k prize-pool. After a 3-way deal at the top, lockitup2487 won the tournament, taking down a $56.6k prize.
