WSOP 2009 Structural Changes
As we know, there are new rules out for the 2009 WSOP but there's also managerial and structural changes to the series; nothing as dramatic as last year's belated final which will remain for this year, however some significant alterations none-the-less.
For starters the starting stacks which went up by 100% last year will increase this year by a further 50%, making the tournaments more flexible in terms of their structures and levels. Jack Effel, the tournament director commented:
The $1,000 buy-in "stimulus" tournament, for example, will give players a stack of 3,000 to go to battle with. Added levels include 75-150 as well as 1,200-2,400, which is included in $1,500 buy-in and up events. The Main Event will award 30,000 in starting chips and has a bevy of levels, each lasting two hours
The move towards a deeper
stack tournament is based on a speculated playing time of between 8 and 10 hours in the first two days of play, and is aimed to give the player more choices and ultimately more play. The practical implication of the increase in starting chips may be a longer tournament in which the tournaments may require more levels, and on an average of each level lasting 2 hours, that's an extra 4 hours per event.
The
Pot Limit Omaha tournaments will also so a change in that their entrants will start off with stacks equal to the value of the buy-in, and whilst there will be no re-buys there will be a 3 level window for add-ons, and a required add-on at the end of level 3. The 2009 series will actually see no re-buys at all, following their exclusion after unfavourable feedback from the Players Advisory Council.
