In an attempt to further promote STT play, PokerStars has launched its
“Battle of the Planets” promotion. The promo will give away around $3 million per year, and it gives a shot at a share of the prize money, to all players, regardless of whether they’re high volume, high-stakes ones or only recreational players. Depending on whether you’re a high volume player or not, you’ll be classified into the low-orbit tier, or the high-orbit one. Given the fact that low-orbit players play less, the STTs that they play every week are divided into groups of 40. These groups are made up as follows: from 1 to 40, from 40 to 80 etc. Each week, the 40 STT group, in which the player achieves the best results is considered towards the weekly leader-board. The other STTs do not count at all.
High-orbit (volume) players have a similar system in place, only in their case the STTs are grouped by the 100.
No, you do not have to be a high-stakes player to qualify for this promotion. PokerStars has created different tier-groups for smaller and bigger buy-in STTs. You can play as small as $1 to $2.99, you’ll still get your shot at a prize-pool of $1,500. The prize-pools are similar for low and high orbit players.
Those playing the cheapest STTs will play in the Mercury group. There are Mars, Venus, Earth, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn and Jupiter groups, the bigger the size of the planet the group is named after, the bigger buy-in STTs it features. Jupiter (the biggest) is about SNGs which cost more than $300 to enter. The prize pool (both for low orbit and high orbit, is $5,000.
Every week, for every tournament cash finish, players receive leader-board points. These points can be fewer or more, depending on the position (winner gets the most) and the number of initial participants.
Those who finish in the top 10 of either the low or the high orbit leader-board, go on to play in a monthly $50,000 ‘Battle of the Planets’ tournament.
Obviously, the opportunities abound, and if you’re a good player you’ll be able to squeeze much more additional value out of these STTs than the sum of the fees you’ll pay out for them. That won’t only mean rake-free play, it’ll mean you’re actually getting paid to play.
