The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is THE most prestigious online poker series in the world. It is one of the biggest and most attractive events in poker, regardless of whether it’s online or live events we’re talking about. Its sheer size is truly monumental, and the prize-pools involved reflect this fact. It is basically the WSOP online, with a set of smaller events leading up to a Grand Finale, a main event which rewards winners with prizes in the hundreds of thousands of dollars range. In 2007, the first prize in the main event was $1,378,330.50, which represented a new record for the event.
Ever since it has first been organized, the WCOOP went through an upward spiral of popularity much like the WSOP has in.
In 2002, it was about $65,000 (it true though that the value of the buck was different back than too), in 2003 it grew to over $220k, in 2004 it hit $420k, and in 2005 it reached $570k. In 2006, renowned professional, J.C. Tran won the main event (there were more than 2,500 participants in it already) and took home $60k. 2007 saw the record prize so far, a player identified by the online nick ka$ino took down no less than $1.3 million.
The great thing about the WCOOP is not just that you can change your life forever by winning – even one of the smaller events, but also that you get to play alongside some of the best know poker professionals in the business. “Fossilman” Greg Raymer, Daniel Negreanu, or Joe Hachem are always involved in such events together with the rest of the professionals from team PokerStars.
